The AI Companion Market in 2026 - What the Numbers Show
Most "AI companion market" pages publish numbers with no source, no date and no method. This entry does the opposite: it publishes the figures we can verify, labels each one with its source and the month it covers, and lists the things we could not measure. Where the data is missing, we say so rather than estimating.
If you want to cite anything here, cite the original source — we are reporting it, not producing it.
What we measured, and how

Candy AI is used as the reference platform throughout because it is one of the largest and most widely tracked products in the category, which makes it the most reliable single bellwether. It is not the whole market. All figures below describe that platform, not the category's total size.
Traffic: a strong, growing platform with a narrow search channel
| Metric | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly visits | 45.59M | August 2026 |
| Month-on-month change | +7.55% | Aug 2026 vs Jul 2026 |
| Previous two months | 42.39M (Jul), 34.49M (Jun) | — |
| Global rank | #908 | August 2026 |
| Country rank | #649 (United States) | August 2026 |
| Pages per visit / avg. visit duration / bounce | 2.56 / 06:59 / 64.81% | August 2026 |

Three months of growth — 34.49M → 42.39M → 45.59M — with a global rank inside the top 1,000 puts this platform in the same traffic band as mid-sized mainstream consumer apps, not a niche curiosity.
Search: 1.5% of traffic, and almost all of it branded
| Metric | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Organic search visits | ≈675K | August 2026 |
| Organic as a share of total visits | ≈1.5% (calculated) | August 2026 |
| Paid search visits | 0 | August 2026 |
| Top 5 organic keywords | candy ai, candyai, candy.ai, candi ai, candy a.i. — all position 1 | August 2026 (US) |

This is the most useful number in the whole entry. The platform's organic search traffic is almost entirely branded — including two common misspellings of its own name, which it also ranks number one for. It does not appear to depend on winning category queries like "ai companion" at all. Growth is coming from being named elsewhere: direct traffic, referrals and creator content, not from search visibility for what the product does.
For anyone building in this category, the implication is blunt: ranking for the category is a different game from owning the brand, and the two are not won with the same content.
Link profile: enormous volume, thin editorial quality
| Metric | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Backlinks | 193.86M | August 2026 |
| Referring domains | 8.65K | August 2026 |
| Links per referring domain | ≈22,413 (calculated) | August 2026 |
| Authority Score | 52 | August 2026 |
Source: Semrush public page, August 2026 snapshot.
A ratio of roughly 22,000 links per referring domain is not what editorial coverage looks like; it is the signature of sitewide templates and link networks, where a small number of domains link out from tens of thousands of pages each. It is also why the Authority Score stays moderate despite the enormous raw count — volume and trust are different measurements.
We then checked what those links actually are. On 2026-09-28 we sampled 36 pages that link to
candy.ai and parsed the rel attribute and redirect target of all 96 links pointing at the
platform. 86% were nofollow or sponsored. Only a handful of pages linked to the platform
dofollow from body text. In practical terms: the overwhelming majority of those 193.86M links
carry no ranking weight, and exist to pass traffic and reinforce brand recall instead.
That is a deliberate strategy, not an accident — and it is the same pattern that makes affiliate networks the dominant distribution channel in this category.
AI referral: the channel that actually grew
| Metric | Value | Period |
|---|---|---|
| Visits attributed to AI platforms | 23M | trailing 6 months |
| Share of the category's AI-platform traffic attributed to this platform | 53.34% | last month in the snapshot |
| Next largest AI-traffic recipients in the set | candynetwork.ai (4.44%), candyai.ai (0.06%), ourdream.ai (0.04%) | same |

More than half of the AI-referral traffic the tracking tool could attribute in this category goes to a single platform, and the runner-up shares its name — suggesting an owned secondary site rather than an independent winner.
This is the newest and least understood channel in the category, and it is growing faster than search. It also explains why informational pages matter even for products that do not monetise search traffic directly: the pages that language models read and quote are how a platform becomes the named answer to "what should I use for this?"
What we could not measure
Being explicit about the gaps is part of the exercise:
- Total category size. There is no reliable public figure for the whole AI companion market's traffic or revenue. Any single-market-share percentage you see quoted is a guess or a press release.
- Revenue. Not disclosed by private operators, and not inferable from visit counts.
- Paying subscribers. Registered-account figures appear in marketing material without verification, and "users" is defined differently by every vendor.
- App-store traffic. Mobile app usage is tracked on a different basis from web traffic and is not comparable with the numbers above.
- Content quality per platform. Nothing here measures whether users like the product. Retention data in this category is private.
How to use these numbers
- Treat the traffic figures as a relative benchmark, not an absolute market measure. One platform's August 2026 viscounts tell you about that platform.
- Treat the branded-search finding as a structural insight that transfers across the category: these products are recommended by people, and then searched by name.
- Treat the link figures as a warning about vanity metrics. 193.86M backlinks and an Authority Score of 52 belong in the same sentence, or the number is misleading.
- If you are publishing your own figures, copy the format used here: source, month, method, and an explicit list of what you could not measure.
Key takeaways
- The reference platform received 45.59M visits in August 2026, up 7.55% month-on-month, ranking #908 globally (Semrush public snapshot, 2026-09-17).
- Just ~1.5% of that traffic came from organic search, and its top organic keywords were all brand terms or misspellings — the category grows on brand and recommendation, not category SEO.
- 193.86M backlinks from 8.65K domains (≈22,413 links per domain) coexist with an Authority Score of
52, and 86% of the links we sampled were
nofolloworsponsored. - AI platforms delivered 23M visits in six months, with 53.34% of attributed category AI traffic going to one platform — the fastest-changing channel in the category.
- Total market size, revenue and subscriber counts are not reliably measurable from public data, and we do not estimate them.
